The 500D's higher pixcel count means it will resolve more detail although only marginally....but it does require good glass to make best use of its sensor. Allot of image shaprness is down to far more then the camera body alone..... subject.. shooting conditions.. setting like apature/shutter speed & iso.. but the big one is the glass... a great lens (look at any prime lens) is far sharper than a entry level telephoto/kit lens.

I'm really intrigued by this line from Canon... I myself own an S3 IS, being a big sports guy I obviously need the range (12x zoom) to shoot from far distances at my stadium seat. One of the things i always wished was the ultra-zoom models were smaller like those little tiny portables that you see 20-somethings girls toting at the bars in their mini purses. Looks like Canon finally listened!

Thanks for a great video! However... Shutter speed doesn't affect amount of light from the flash because flash happens very rapidly. The only way to affect flash exposure is by changing the aperture. When you were slowing down the shutter, the light meter was reducing your aperture, which resulted in more ambient and less flash. So the end result is exactly as described, only difference is that technically flash exposure was affected by smaller aperture :) Please correct me if i'm wrong.

This is a problem with the shutter speed of the video camera. Usually the flash fires between frames so it doesn't show up in the video. But the flash is actually firing. :)

DSLR's began use in movie's like The Matrix, and now they've assumed a special spot in film production. These cameras can mount in any spot where a large video camera is not an option (car int/ext, steadicam, stunt,etc). And it is much more expendable than a $200k motion picture camera.

I'm sorry, but you have no idea what you're talking about. You cannot get a better video camera than that for that price. It's Full HD (not that big of a deal) - the big deal is that you can use lenses for DOF which you cannot on regular camera besides with DOF adapters.

5D Mark II with either 24-70 or 24-105 looks real solid. I also like the way Canon offers more economical 70-200mm f/4.0 IS as well as the f/2.8 IS version, more options than Nikon, more bang for the money.

FAIL: Replacing Shutter on Canon EOS 30D

After 87K shutter acuations my shutter fail on my Canon 30D. Repair cost would have ammounted to $300 so I decided to spend $50 on repair parts and try to repair it myself. The repair failed, so now I just need to buy a new camera (that won't be for at least 6 months).

Well I've since fixed it...you can see that experience in my newest video upload. The DC motor is for driving the mirror mechanism. The shutter curtains are driven by two small micro motors.

@motleypixel One thing I have ran into with the EOS cameras (and error 99) is the flash unit was stuck (wouldn't pop up)...when it failed it immediately gave an error 99 without even attempting to take the pic. Thought you might want to know because it had the same symptom...light click, then nothing, but it happened with all lenses. Depends on the mode of course...

Essentially mine would make a little clicking sound and produce error 99...mirror wouldn't move. Can you also give some description where this mirror mechanism is located or what it looks like? hey :) ... three weeks ago I've already watched your vid... and was in the end a lil bit afraid to do it by myself... but finally I repaired it by myself... after the first build together it had de same problem... so i disassemled it again and found the problem... it was really just a simple problem ;) one of the mechanisms who is pulling the mirrow back down wasn't on the right place where it should be... mine is now working like new... and I'm a Girl ;) .. with no electronic education ;)

Does he realize that you can't see the detail that the lens are capable in those example pictures? Youtube isn't the best forum for viewing high resolution photography. I could be wrong but you don't want to format your cards. When you do it reuses the same section of memory, and raises the potential for card failure.

af speed has alot to do with the body thats why olympus has the fastest autofocus with a 2.8-4.0 lens in the world faster than any ''pro'' body camera ever made if you dont belive me look up olympus E3 with 12-60( 24-120=35mm) lens cameralabs has a video on youtube on the E3 and it shows how fast it is on the e3 and the 520 crazy fast check out the IQ at pbase oly dosent fuck around

Just got this camera today, didn't use it yet. One problem is that there is no way to adjust the lanyard to your wrist. So I would recommend to find one, if you have butter fingers!

Incredible with the color ambiance & sound resonance all captured with thrilling results!!! Should I get it (I might after all, wished I had it for TinaTurner's Concert in London this month) and as fotr the design or color to shape, doesn't bother me... its handy in measutrements and I'd prefer that would-be snatch thief passed it coz it looks undesirable... who cares! On top of the zoom. There is a switch P or Auto. Swap to P for manual features. On your LCD screen, there is a dial, go to the focus option and press UP on the dial 2x. It should activate it. Then turn the dial left of right to focus.

The built-in mic picks up more volumn from the front approximately 45 degrees than other radius around the camcorder. I would get a digital recorder and a mic with either 35mm jack or usb connection and do separate audio recording. You can use video editing software like Sony Vegas Pro 8 to merge the audio with the video later on. With wind deduction mode turn on it's as I described it above, other than that it picks up quite some noise as the volume becomes louder.

There is no audio control for the HG10. You might want to look into the HG20. However, if audio control is an essential for you, you might as well grab a sibling or a friend to be your boomer (someone to hold a giant mic and record audio while you film).

VIXIA is just a name for this line of camcorder, there isn't anything different. People tend to leave the VIXIA out to shorten the name. The HG10 provide a pretty good manual control over the camera, ie. manual focusing, shutter speed, etc. It records the video as *.MTS file, which can only be read by Sony Vegas Pro 8. The later release of Premiere may support this file type. The newer model records it in QuickTime's *.MOV format, just like the Canon 5D MKII.

By slowing down your shutter speed you can accommodate for low light. However, this may result in ghosting. Most of the time it's not necessary to slow down the shutter, camera will adjust accordingly.

It's up to you, but for serious videographers, there's no substitute for a real video camera. There are so many settings you don't have on a still camera that are in the HVX. Plus, the HVX does 4:2:2 1920x1080

Actually, Taylor loves this camera. I think as a still camera it's great, but it really isn't for filmmakers. Besides the fact that is has no XLR input, which is a HUGE problem, it's not an HVX replacement. It's great for getting some really good cinematic shots with some really good looks, but it just doesn't work like a real HD camera. As a filmmaker and videographer, I can tell you that it's worth it to get the HVX over the 5D if you're doing video.

i feel like it seems you guys went in not wanting to like this camera. I get that it's not the best for filming but for literally a fraction of the cost of what it would be to get the hvx alone forget about lense and it's versatility because it is so small and ready to use I think it is the perfect camera for an independant filmmaker.
