Good point for not dropping those small screws! I do magnetize the driver by rubbing its tip on a speaker magnet. It does loose it's magnetism over time, I think in part because I keep it along with other tools in a metal case.

One more thing I just remembered. On my first mod I used a little too much glue in one corner and it squished out leaving a tiny spot in the top right corner of my images. Use a VERY small amount of glue.

I've done quite a few of these mods myself mostly on 300D. I experienced two problems and thought I'd share them here. The one big problem was on my 3rd mod using a metal pick that had a fairly sharp end to remove the ribbon cables. One of the ribbon cables came out of its socket all at once and the pick slipped and punctured the cable. Lesson learned: use a wood pick with a slightly dull tip. The other problem was minor but one of the hinged connectors broke at the hinge.

For UltraViolet light (UV) it would be best to replace the original IR cut filter (LPF#2)and also the anti-aliasing filter (LPF#1) with a clear glass filter. I have tested an earlier Canon DSLR model, the 300D with a clear glass replacerment using a UV pass filter for imaging the planet Venus and it worked well. The orignal Canon UV/IR cut filter that is removed during the modification cuts off ultra-violet light at about 360nm wavelength.

You can do infrared with an unmodified 1000D using an infrared filter. The problem is that since DSLRs have an infrared blocking filter inside the camera and in the exposure path, there is only a small amount of infrared light that makes it to the imaging chip. But if you use long exposures you can take infrared images of still objects like landscapes. Using a tripod and a fast lens like the 50mm f1.8 would help. You could get the Hoya R72 and have some fun with it on your unmodified camera.

The G11 seems like an excellent camera, but I probably won't buy it because of a serious design flaw (in my opinion). When taking a picture, it's very awkward positioning your right thumb (too close to other buttons). I'd hate to hand it to someone to take my picture - they'd probably hit some other button ... Not very good ergonomics.

I'm very happy with my G11. Canon has always made easy to use interfaces with their digital cameras, and this has allowed me to make the step up to more advanced photography much easier. All the manual controls are easier to get to than the S90, so if you're usually shooting in the Auto function get the S90. And I cannot believe how high the prices of these cameras are in the UK! Got my G11 for 450USD On a side note, not many bags fit this camera. I use a small camcorder bag, LowePro Edit100

And the more controversial the situation, and more newsworthy, the more dangerous it becomes. Therefore, a point-and-shoot is oftentimes the tool of choice for real pjs working in war zones. At this point, Canon is closer to making an ideal photo journalist tool (in their Powershot G series) than Leica, even if they are seemingly unaware of it and determined to screw it up.

A swivel-screen can be very useful depending on the user, but of course it adds, or rather subtracts, from durability. How Canon has sold out to the "Walmart crowd" I do not understand. First off and quite literally, I have not seen Walmart stock this camera in their stores. Morever, when holding this camera its feel is certainly above a 'walmart finish', and with its price upwards of $500 with accessories it is priced slightly above "Walmart crowd" customers. Furthermore, my contention is that there are already dozens of choices for consumers who want a swivel screen for shooting their next epic movie production on a point-and-shoot camera, and very few choices for those who want a serious tool for photojournalistic assignments. Canon sold out the spirit and serious potential of their premium point-and-shoot camera to attract more of the Walmart crowd. Very disappointing!

@mbiastock, 1.4 is supposedly USM (some reviews say it uses another type of motor, not sure of the exact term), provides better bokeh, because of the 8 blades (vs. 5 on the 1.8) and is faster (in terms of aperture). Also, if you intend on swapping this lens with another often, be wary of the plastic lens mount on the 1.8. Then again, I've read a bunch of reviews, and as far as image quality, most reviewers claim they are almost similar.

Good review. Thinking about picking this lens up myself. Good price and as you said a great "learner lens". There is also an f 1.4 50mm from Canon that is about 3 times the price of this lens. Think I'll stick with the 1.8 after watching this. Also, lens seems fast but also a bit noisy. Not relevant for the rock shows, though.

Beautiful camera! Especially with a DOF adapter! I find its manual focusing fine; never had a problem. I also modded it with a DXA-4P so I can plug in pro XLR mics. And it shoots in 24p! Awesome cam! Very happy :)

This is a quick test of the canon 7d with the zoom H4 to find out how much drift you get when recording a long video file while using the zoom for out board audio. I turns out you looks about 7 frames every 10 min which is corrected with a 100.042% clip correction.

I did the same test with the Canon EOS 7D shooting with 25 fps and the Zoom H4N recording with 48 kHz 24 Bit. Over a 11 minute duration it was in perfect sync, not 1 frame was shifting! Lucky me! :o)

It probably is the zoom, i don't think it has any kind of stranded sync in it. But on a bright note, mine is always exactly 7 frames off at the 10 min mark. So it looses less then a frame a min which is better then 5d, and doesn't make much difference on pitch.

I own the Kodak Z915 and yes, you can set manual settings for aperture, shutter, flash brightness, and ISO settings. It's a very nice camera considering the price. Takes good pictures and videos, and it has a good mic for capturing sound, even if it is a bit bass heavy.

camera seems to do a good job with slow pans, which is normally what people would do. But WHO cares if your going to do a quick pan and then stop onto a subject. It's getting all motion blurred and crap which might add to the effect of movement.

depends. I think you will need two or 3 cameras, esp when shooting 7D's to pull of a pro wedding shoot. If you have enough light, the EX1 and a b camera (could be 7D for low light) probably the best combo

Of course, if you must whip pan, you can always shoot it slowly and speed it up in post by say 300%. You can then add motion blur to taste. It seems idiotic to force the camera to go beyond its limits. Also, use a better fluid head that doesn't jitter as you move it. Pros use pro gear.

the idea was to amplify the jello effect, who on earth would pan that fast, you should give it a shot, 7D video mode, of course it has its limitations compared to the EX1 and HVX200 but beats both when it comes to low light video.

I have a 7D, but seriously, if you're going to be making whip pans of this nature you're not going to us any DSLR. The right tool for the right job. I only bought the 7D because I can change the lens and I needed a new still camera. I love it, but would never use it over my EX1 or HVX200 for creating really usable video. Use a hammer to hit the nail, not a screwdriver.

the speed is 100% (30fps), just the panning speed itself changed during panning. it was shot at 30fps and the final output is 24fps and its causing the choppiness.

I'm so glad you posted this footage!!! Ok another question: is this footage slowed down, like, were you whip panning super fast, and then slowed it down quarter or half speed? Because the panning left to right is very slow and in this video and you wouldn't expect this kind of jumpiness.

Im stuck between the 7D and th 5D2, im going to be using it a lot for video, and getting the film look.. from what i have researched, the 7D looks a lot more like film, and if your going to be using it professionally you will be lighting your scenes, and not using fast pans and tilts.

It's funny because this technology will only get better. CCD chips don't suffer through the same rolling shutter as CMOS scanning does. That leads me to believe that if the world of photography will venture into this new world of combined photo/video, then the internal technology has to progress over to CCD chips. My first HD camera was the Sony FX1 which I bought the week it came out. Soon after, HD moved from 1080p to 1080i and I was stuck with a $5,000 camera that was old in under 2 years
