Hey Mark, love your tutorials! I have a question on focus. I am getting older and my eyes are not as sharp. Sometimes my images are slightly out of focus at post production, but looked ok when I was taking them? Is it corrective eyeware that is necessary, or will a diapter setting work at all levels and what is the best way to secure foucs related issues. @DantePasquale The rule of thumb still works. But I'd do some tests. I usually compensate more for longer lenses. I'm normally shooting around 1/500 when shooting a 200mm lens. So I think you're right on target with the speeds you're already using. An IS lens will allow you to shoot slower and a tripod will let you shoot much, much slower (of course). :)

Mark, does the rule of thumb rule work for cameras that aren't full frame like my XTi? I usually use 2x the length, but was curious if I can go slower if I need to when shooting hand held. For example with 200mm zoom I don't shoot slower than 1/400

I use the pen method, but need to see where I'm going inside the camera. It normally takse several wiipes to get the sensor clean. If you are a busy photographer it's essential. If you have one or two spots it doesn't take long to use the healing brush in Photoshop. I always spot my work at 100% anyway, to ensure a really clean image.

Half think this is a joke. Why would they bury the part that wears out first, so deep down, that you have to take the whole frigin camera apart. My 20D failed me on my last vacation; unable to autofocus and reframe. Camera would refocus on full depression of the shutter button. Would also , intermittently, not fire at all unless I wiggled my finger around. On disassembly, I did see a discoloration on the bottom leaf of the button mechanism, from the smallest amount of moisture, probably from sea spray. Thanks for the vid, my camera is back to normal.

Is there a way for me to play this video in a normal speed (the fast motion get me dizzy!!). Perhaps there's a way for me to download it and play it on my computer? I have a 50D with a very dirty viewfinder and I like to clean it. I have got to the focus screen and SI plate, but the dirt is still there, so I think it may be on the other side of the pentaprism and will require a disassembly to get rid of the dirt!

You are very talented. I showed this to some of my repair technicians, and they were fully impressed. A couple recommendations - they recommend discharging the flash when taking the front cover off, they also recommend replacing the shutter release switch. Kudos for such an informative video!

One note though, even though I cleaned the contacts with Alcohol, I followed the video and used a eraser on the contacts, and I was amazed at how much dirt came off with each time. I erased the contacts, then when it got dirty, I cleaned it on a piece of paper, then erase again. I ended up doing this for about 1 hr to get off as much dirt as I could. It took a surprising long time to get off all the dirt off mine using the eraser. In the end, it was clean though.

Yes, back-illuminated sensors are the future, iPhone 4 has one too. may be the successor of S90 will have a same sized (1/1/.7") back-illuminated sensor and HD video. Although Ixus 300HS/SD4000 does shoot better and low noise pictures then S90 when shooting in low light, I have observed that S90 gives better detail in pictures because of its bigger 1/1.7" inch sensor same as that of G11. Very nice review from Kai but some more low light sample shots for comparison would be excellent

The 500D's higher pixcel count means it will resolve more detail although only marginally....but it does require good glass to make best use of its sensor. Allot of image shaprness is down to far more then the camera body alone..... subject.. shooting conditions.. setting like apature/shutter speed & iso.. but the big one is the glass... a great lens (look at any prime lens) is far sharper than a entry level telephoto/kit lens.

That's because I'm more of a visual/hands on learner. You can't fault people for not reading the manual. I mean it's always possible, when it comes to winter settings though I've found it best to use Program mode with a lower exposure mode (if you had snow). Since you're shooting your dog though try the sports setting, on the dial it looks like a person with an animal symbol. That setting is geared more towards activity and you will get less blurring.

Today when I was out with my dog for example I took a cuple of pictures of the winter landscape (we don't have snow here, so there are just bare trees and things like that) and 2/3 of the pictures aren't sharp and the colour of those which are, are so.. pale, not true to life. I have this cam since 2 days and I'm really disappointed. In the automatic mode about 90% of all the pictures aren't sharp or the picture quality is quite bad. I first thought that it's just my fault, as I'm not an expert, but my dad, who really is one, took some pictures with the canon and they also weren't good. After all the positive reviews I read, I can't explain myself why my pictures are so bad :( So I'm planning to give it back... Maybe you got a useful hint for me?

I've only been using this camera for a few weeks, but I really like it. It's manual mode offers great customization. Another camera you might want to look into is the Lumix ZS3-TZ both these have the megazoom, and are top in their class.

I never said that. Most people can get by with a simple 7MP camera because the largest they will view their photos is 1920x1080. It's only beneficial to get more MP if you are planning on printing large photos.
