Canon 7d Audio sync with zoom H4 over long video clips

This is a quick test of the canon 7d with the zoom H4 to find out how much drift you get when recording a long video file while using the zoom for out board audio. I turns out you looks about 7 frames every 10 min which is corrected with a 100.042% clip correction.

@papikache Its actually not an H4n its the older H4, and there is a known problem with the h4 holding sync. The audio is sync'd at the beginning and slowly drifts out of sync as the clip goes on.

Onelonedork could it be that you did not sit them right in the timeline? I see that during your clip at 1:18m you had them almost lined up but not entirely. did you try putting the marker(red line) as the canons audio started instead of putting it in the middle of the H4n's audio? try to do that and see if it fixes the frame drops.

@sherwood1138 48k 16bit was what the zoom h4 was set at. The 7d was running at 1080p. I've actually had the chance to test more then one z00m h4 and it turns out that the the original zoom h4's timing can very from unit to unit, Mine happened to be off by 100.047% however another was at 99.085%. The zoom h4n has a little better quality control every one i've tested has been dead on with the canon 7d.

I think it might be poor quality control in H4 series. I tested out a friends H4 and the timing over 10 min was 100.02 off. I have an H4N on order. I'll post a video when ever it shows up.

I did the same test with the Canon EOS 7D shooting with 25 fps and the Zoom H4N recording with 48 kHz 24 Bit. Over a 11 minute duration it was in perfect sync, not 1 frame was shifting! Lucky me! :o)

It probably is the zoom, i don't think it has any kind of stranded sync in it. But on a bright note, mine is always exactly 7 frames off at the 10 min mark. So it looses less then a frame a min which is better then 5d, and doesn't make much difference on pitch.

What I hate when I shoot wedding are amateur photographers - I mean guests with compact cameras, they ruining when wedding copuple poses. Photography looses then integrity, when people runnin into images with nonwedthings - pink cameras...or so...And especialy I dont like when people not acutaly needed in image are shown there and dont respect instructions of photographer...even theyre shadows can make some good shots looking like crap.

whats wrong with direct flash?.. i think he manage to balance the flash and the ambiance light pretty well and the image looks great. and the way he handle the fill flash also is quite impressive with the limited gear he's using for a wedding photographer (40D, 10-22mm, 17-85mm and 580exii).

Personally the only reason why I would opt for the 40D is only because it shoots faster and has a high flash sync speed compared to the 5D otherwise he would have been happier with the 5D, smoother images, slightly better dynamic range, faster focusing and full frame. What kills me is his n00b lighting. Direct flash? I'm disappointed in Canon allowing a photographer that can't light properly be representing you as a company. Take this crap down plz.

3:06 is the best shot of this collection, I'm still trying to figure out why he exposes the way he does. The hard light from the flash is blowing out the dress in many of the shots, there is no detail. The 1D mark III would be the optimal choice for a wedding, 10fps for quick capture, & and huge dynamic color range to help draw in the details. I noticed, all the shots with high apertures were slightly out of focus or washed out with flash, while the low apertures were more dynamic. Needs work.

@tastysnack1 Well, It does not have its own constant auto focus. You have to turn the ring manually or press a button to get it to auto focus. Considering the fact that I never actually did either during this video you never saw the focus ability of it at all. While it's not a camcorder the T1i is universally known for great video quality, and the T2i will top that.

Hi guys i have done a sef portrait that was a but more tricky check it out: fotocommunity.de/pc/pc/mypics/1579600/display/22125218 I used a nikon D700 it was set to continues focus however not in self timer but in interval mode! and set to take a shot every 20 seconds. that way i made sure i would get one nice action shoot of me playing the drums. cheers from berlin germany!

Another option (if you are a Canon user) is with EOS Utility. Focus can be done manually or with Remote Live View shooting. Set it up to a computer and have the monitor facing you. You can see the results instantly, you can even set the interval timer shooting and have the camera shoot any number of shots shots in a row.

And if you're using a Nikon, definitely check out the ~$35 remotes from Hong Kong that can be found on Ebay. They are radio frequency, not line of site, obviously inexpensive and work well. I think Nikon's alternative is a line of site, very expensive remote.

Great video, it really helped me out! I'm wondering, would the same procedure work to connect a wireless mic to a field recorder, like a Zoom H4 or Edirol R-09? They have mic inputs, and I'd like to have a wireless mic connected so I can interview people as someone else works the camcorder. Also, do you know of a lavaliere mic that would work for this, it would be less conspicuous than a handheld mic (the interviewees always know they're on, so I'm not hiding it from them). Thanks.

@VitalityMassage Be sure to use only alkaline batteries. Static will be caused by non alkaline batteries or weak batteries. That said, it is a very low cost wireless microphone. If you want better, get a Sennheiser G3 wireless system. Runs about $600, but works great.

I took your advice and have found that this mic has a lot of static and poor range. The internal mic on my canon actually is far clearer than the azden wms pro mic. The range is not 250 ft as stated on the box. It is between 40 and 60 ft and the static gets worse as you get farther away. It's going back to Amazon today. I would not recommend this mic to anyone. I do love my canon zr 960 and plan on buying a better quality mic (yes, I'll probably spend $300-$500). Brett

I took this video of American Falls with my new Canon Powershot sx210. It really is a great camera. I got some beautiful pictures as well. When I got home and hooked up the camera to my 57 inch DLP 1080p with a mini hdmi cable, I was amazed that this camera could take such nice videos!! It was very windy so I apologize for the shakiness.

As for me, i prefer Canon 450D because canon 40D has uncomfortable controls: you will always select how to operate in camera's menu with knob or joystick. Canon 450D has more clear controls - 5 navigation buttons.

Mark let Adorama know I've been buying frequently from them and using their photo processing services as a result of their sponsorship. It seems like they're investing more gear to make these videos better which is a good thing. My request for a future tutorial: low light indoor sports photography w/o a flash. I've been photographing a lot of boxing/kickboxing/MMA recently, and it has to be the most challenging shoots I've ever done. Any tips for this would be awesome: settings, lenses, etc.

AS always Mark, nice job with the video. One minor improvement next time you discuss the Sekonic meter is to tell people that the 4th option (wireless pocketwizard) does not show up on the display unless you have installed the transmitter... Keep up the fantastic work!
