I'm using the Sekonic L758DR and my Macbook Pro doesn't recognize the meter. What can I do?
By: photofx. on 04 Jun 10, 22:14:59
I am the proud owner of a 558 (not 758); can I buy the target to check the DR & midpoint of my camera.......in other words, manually calibrating my 558 with my DSLR? I would think it should be possible (I can live without the function/capability of uploading the info to the meter). THANKS in advance for any info you'd might to share.

@acprocissi True. The Target II has certainly made the process easier. The outside field and reverse side of the first Exposure Target reflect at 18%. The center area and reverse side of the Target II reflect 18% and are the areas to take your spot readings for input for the DTS program.
By: acprocissi. on 18 Mar 10, 22:30:47
Great video... very helpful. Thanks! The only thing I was unclear on was when you spot metered the "18% reflectance border of the test target". My border is decidedly black (I have the Target II). I guess I should use the center gray over-sized square on my target...
By: acprocissi. on 18 Mar 10, 22:26:05
@denios35 They wouldn't give us the card... the meter would have just cost that much more and everyone would have to pay for a card they might not use. This way only those of us that are willing to get robbed get robbed! :)

After buying this premium lightmeter, Sekonic now expects me to pay 105 Euros for a frreaking custom greycard? Seriously, I'm a generous guy, especially when it comes to equipment standards, but that;s nothing but thievery.
By: rtrutna. on 04 Feb 10, 23:57:37
@sekonicvids - yeah, this information helped. I did part of what you suggested and did tests at 3 different focal length, but not with different ISOs. Thx.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:59:55
And the Meters analog readout will guide you to the right settings for every scene and subject.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:59:47
With the profile loaded in your L-758DR, you can do this consistently, day in and day out and know you have the best result before you take the shot. Profiling your camera also calibrates the incident reading to your cameras midtone reading. Every camera is not the same. And you might want to place the midtone a little higher or lower than would be normal for your camera brand. You can customize the meter with the DTS software.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:59:33
Knowing the dynamic range of your camera will help you to know how to set the exposure to place a particular tone, say the brightest for example, at the precise place you want it. That is, with a quick spot reading you can determine the perfect exposure for a white wedding dress that will put it at the very top of the range, white with detail, without blowing out the details.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:58:58
Then as you change the ISO in the meter, the meter readout will be adjusted with it.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:58:48
Differences between lenses can be as small as .1 stop and to date I have seen them as much as .6 stop. Once you are setup and the camera locked down on a tripod, it is best to test all of your lenses at 2-3 predetermined focal lengths for Zooms and 3 different ISO settings. This will give you the best understanding of the accuracy of your camera system. If there are differences with different ISOs, all of the information can be combined into one file and that file downloaded into the L-758DR.
By: sekonicvids. on 04 Feb 10, 22:58:22
When a lens attached to a camera it becomes a unique exposure universe. Each lens has optical and mechanical differences that will affect the final exposure and the dynamic range of the imaging system. Depending on the quality of the lens, the range could change as the lens is zoomed. Depending on the camera system, the dynamic range can change with the ISO in use. It can also change with the Kelvin temperature of the light that is illuminating your subject. (continued)
By: rtrutna. on 31 Jan 10, 20:07:31
Maybe I missed this, but for a wide-range telephoto lens, for example, 24-105, or 70-200, does it make any difference what focal length you create profile with? (What is ideal?) Will one set of target shots at any focal length do, or could lens profile vary at different focal lengths
By: Jez2008UK. on 02 Jan 10, 15:54:12
Sorry for this dumb question, but what are clipping points ?? And what is the dynamic range ?? Is that the range of pure black to pure white ?? Or a range from black to white where TEXTURE may still be visible ?? Also, how does the software know what the clipping points should be for my camera ?? How does the software know what my clipping points
By: Jez2008UK. on 02 Jan 10, 15:37:14
Might be worth stating (like I am here !) that in this video, it mentions to take 11 bracketed shots (5 under, 5 over and one correct exposure). This is not strictly true. It depends on which Profile Target you are calibrating off. If you're using the new Profile II Target, you ONLY need to take 3 exposures (1 under, 1 over and one at the correct exposure).
By: sekonicvids. on 24 Dec 09, 20:47:39
(continued) These can be integrated into a single camera program. I also suggest using the shooting example on the video. That is, fixed aperture with shutter speed adjustment. Any broken lines in the graph indicates the action of the mechanical diaphragm of your camera system. Make sure to use a tripod and lock everything down for best results. Phil B. at Sekonic.
By: sekonicvids. on 24 Dec 09, 20:47:17
Using the Target and DTS system tells you two things: What the mid-tone exposure for your camera system is, and what the edges (brightest and darkest points that can be recorded properly). It is a good idea to do a test with each of the lenses you are using. I would suggest three ISOs to test the stability of your camera system.
By: Jez2008UK. on 20 Dec 09, 11:06:27
The reason I ask this, is that in the manual on page 55, it says "Set the Camera's ISO to the one you want for calibration". This can't be right. If I have 3 lenses, the permutations for those 3 lenses plus ALL those ISO possibilities would be enormous.
By: Jez2008UK. on 20 Dec 09, 10:54:46
From what I'm seeing here, would one have to take profile shots for every lens AND every ISO you are likely to shoot at ?? Or is it JUST for every lens ?? The instruction says for ISO 100. Sorry, but I'm totally new to this, I have just purchased a L-758DR and have recently ordered a Profile Target II card in order to calibrate my camera.
By: sekonicvids. on 02 Jan 09, 15:25:57
Version 2.0 of the Digital Transfer Software is designed to be used with Exposure Profile Targets that have alignment marks. The alignment marks simplify and automate the selection of Profile Target images with the DTS software. If you own a Profile Target I and do not have the alignment marks, please request directly from Sekonic USA by calling the Service Department at 914-347-3300. If you live outside the USA, contact your country's distributor.

L-758 profile error: the set level does not exist in the image. change the level to a level that exists in the image in order to calculate Does anybody know how to get around that error? Im trying to create a profile for a D700 with the L-758DR and the profile target I. Which corners do I have to select in the v2 software, there are no marks on the target
By: sekonicvids. on 22 Sep 08, 21:00:02
The most accurate method is to profile each lens.
