hey gordon! i rly need your help .. i'm swaying to and fro between the canon eos 40d and 50d. the 50d only costs about 50? more than the 40d anymore so is that a GO for the 50d for sure? keep in mind that i'm also planning to buy lenses at the price of 300-400? by brands like sigma or tamron so is then the 40d the better choice because of the 14mp of the 50d and those lenses wouldn't be profitable at a 50d? i've already read your reviews but couldn't find help there.. thanks in advance

Luckily a swedish camera store Scandinavian Photo has come over a limited stock of 40d houses that they sell for 5995 swedish crona compared to Nikon d300 18495 swedish crona. I ordered one amidetly. I save a lot of money I am in heaven.

Why did I get a thumbs down? Hacked firmware updates do void canon warranties. Ya it is just a software replacement but that is the deal with most companies that manufacture something like this. Updating your camera with unofficial firmware does void the warranty. It doesn't hurt the camera at all but canon doesn't want to pay for it if it does.

why? It isnt a firmware replace, just a piece of code that runs from the CF. (and let the cam think that its new firmware). When the camera gives an error, you can remove the CF and the battery, after a while replace the CF and battery and there you go without any change!

As for me, i prefer Canon 450D because canon 40D has uncomfortable controls: you will always select how to operate in camera's menu with knob or joystick. Canon 450D has more clear controls - 5 navigation buttons.

The technique is identical for all of Canon's current DSLRs, incoluding the 50D. You can also use a film SLR, although obviously there won't be live view for focusing! You'll have to reply on the viewfinder alone.

Hardly a review .....but good as far as it goes. I like Nikon, I bought into Nikon last year but used Canon for many years. I like the nice rounded "fits in the hands" feel of Nikon, canon feels more square with corners and edges. The one thing I wont do is knock either if these great manufacturers in a "one is better than the other" argument they each have their strengths and weaknesses.

That's just not true anymore. A D700 will easily match what my old F2 could do for 13X9 prints and a D3x is pretty much on par. But the AF systems on better DSLRs are so good that you get more shots with a DSLR. With the LCD's and on the spot post you simply can get more done in most cases. I sold my expensive film bodies 3 years ago and never looked back.

There are many comparison shots online showing the the 40D and D300 have about the same image quality with a small edge for the D300 in low light. But the focusing of the D300 is far more advanced and that's going to make the biggest difference. The 7D is not doing well in tests, showing about the same dynamic range as a old D60. That's because they've jammed too many pixels on a small sensor. The D90 is also better in DR, and so the D90 is going go have better image quality.

You should never decide on a brand based on a camera body. Bodies come and go, but if you've bought 5 Canon lenses (or Nikon) you're going to want to stick with that brand. Nikon tends to be more in front on technology, but more expensive. Canon will have this years cutting technology next year, but at a better price. It's a judgment call.

I honestly like both a lot, but the D90 does have less noise at higher ISO and a bit better color, so I'd have to lean towards that over the 50D, especially if the D90 is cheaper. Nikon also has better low cost zooms, but Canon has more primes. Either has great lenses.

He keeps saying his white balance is already set to custom when it is set to AWB or auto. If it had been set to custom the icon for custom white balance would have been next to the white balance in the menu istead of AWB. I bought some photovision calibration targets and they work great!

I think a more useful demonstration would have been to shoot the white card under a strongly shifted light, show that it's color cast, actually do the custom white balance operation, then take another shot of the white card and show that it comes out white.. Correction to the above comment; If using a Speedlite you have to WB with it, or the images will be strong blue. If you're going to use bounce flash, WB with that b/c whatever you bounce off of will add its own color cast as well.

One note though, even though I cleaned the contacts with Alcohol, I followed the video and used a eraser on the contacts, and I was amazed at how much dirt came off with each time. I erased the contacts, then when it got dirty, I cleaned it on a piece of paper, then erase again. I ended up doing this for about 1 hr to get off as much dirt as I could. It took a surprising long time to get off all the dirt off mine using the eraser. In the end, it was clean though.

@profroopchan To get a slowed down version, this is what I did. I found a Firefox ad-on, called "FLV Resources Downloader" and downloaded the video. I then used "VLC media player" to play the video, and I used the option to slow down the video so I can watch it slower. The slowest speed is still a faster, but at least I can see what he is doing in detail. AdrenalinXI, if you do not like people downloading your video, you can delete this comment. I would like a proper slowed down copy though

Thanks bro.. my Canon XT shutter button started going. I used your video to take the camera apart. On the XT the shutter button is connected to a piece that comes off when unscrewed. I used alcohol and q-tips, would pour a few drops into the shutter relay button and would press on it with the tip of q-tip (cotton striped). Did this 8 times and I could feel the button get a better clicking sound. Put it back together and worked like a charm. $300.....Canon can suck my balls as well... LOL...

hey. thanks for this video it's very helpful. have you tried fixing a shutter curtain because that's what i wanna find out if canon can still be trusted on this. i brought my camera to service for the 2nd time for an error 99 repair. i doubt it if they really do replacement on parts if they say parts need replacements when in fact they only clean them. right? pls let me know if have any advice. video is better.haha

Mate, this combined with the 20D_Shutter_Release.pdf guide found on google helped me fix my 40d shutter, although I must add that though similar, the cameras are constructed rather differently making for some really tight unchartered work. saved me $300 :)

So this is for the shutter button...I just confirmed via a camera repair shop that my 30D has a bad shutter i.e. I need to replace the shutter. Any thoughts on that? I think this video will help me get it dissambled but I don't need to clean my shutter button. My symptom is Err 99 and the shutter stays stuck in the down position. Thanks, Roy

I've got the same problem with my 50D at the moment. Canon Japan are claiming that they've never had any reports of the problem. This video is okay but it's been sped up so much that I wouldn't be confident enough to perform the servicing myself - it doesn't even mention what solution is being used. Also a bit more commentary during the contact cleaning part would have been helpful.

Thats not true,Nikon has a much wider range of lenses, The F-Mount has always been their lens mount since way back and any nikon lens can be mounted with a few exceptions on modern day DSLRs.Canon abandoned their FD mount a long time ago.Nikon lenses are also typically higher performance,usually I only have to go down one stop to get rid of any vignetting or softness.Canon's typically need 2 or 3 for optimal images. Its all just preference, images are about whats in front of the camera not in it

Personally the only reason why I would opt for the 40D is only because it shoots faster and has a high flash sync speed compared to the 5D otherwise he would have been happier with the 5D, smoother images, slightly better dynamic range, faster focusing and full frame. 3:06 is the best shot of this collection, I'm still trying to figure out why he exposes the way he does. The hard light from the flash is blowing out the dress in many of the shots, there is no detail. The 1D mark III would be the optimal choice for a wedding, 10fps for quick capture, & and huge dynamic color range to help draw in the details. I noticed, all the shots with high apertures were slightly out of focus or washed out with flash, while the low apertures were more dynamic. Needs work.

Canon 40D, well 6.5 frames per second and very nice color processing (nice pictures) besides the 10 megapixels and high ISO. This combined with premium lenses such as the 70-200 F/2.8 makes just incredible pictures. Other than that, well the main idea on what to buy relied on who is shooting, remember that YOU are taking the picture, so all the creativity and quality starts from you. in terms of price the higher you go, the better the quality gets.

i personally own a 10-22 and from my opinion, this is with the 17-55 the Rolls Royce of the EF-S Canon Lenses. for portraits, architecture, landscapes et so much type of photos, this lens is just perfect ! The only annoyed me about it is that Canon didn't give a Lens Hood with it ! a friend of mine sold his 17-40 without the lens hood and gave it to me, if not, I would to pay extra dollars only for a piece of plastic..

Theyre cheap on ebay.Also some decent lenses and make sure you get the uv filters to protect the lensMylens and accesoory list is 1 spare battery 2 spare cf card 3 28 135 lens 2 10 22 lens 3 580ex flash and the wireless remote off ebay its called T-4 4 1.4 50mm lens 5 100 macro lens f2.8 so far ive got the 28 135 lens lol theyre all expensive items.

Thanks. Looking for a camera that's good for video and has antishake feature. Had an Olympus MJU700 that died just after waranty. Looked on net and found lots more people got the bluescreen of death error number so will never be buying another Olympus, hence my interest in Canon

I still own a 300D, but am concidering an upgrade since i've had it fot over 5 years now. i don't really find anything you cant really do with it since I have a russian firmware hack wich unlocks a few extra settings. I concider the 350D quite a big upgrade though, so i 'd get that one, or a 400D if you are on a tight budget.

Not really... The 300d is the first consumer dslr on the market, so I't's getting pretty old. Get the 350d. You will be happyer with it ;-)

The 300D sounds like a camera while the other sounds like a construction worker drilling a whole into the ground. By the way, Is the Canon 300D a good camera? Old DSLRs go for a pretty penny on auction sites and I don't have crazy money for a new, modern SLR.

hey creationphotography kodachrome is reversal which has no latitude as DID dslrs so what exactly are you comparing the two to?cause latitude no longer applies.color balance is losing its relevance as is grain and image size,speed,and post processing.its jerks like you that fail to admit thier weekend warriors and end up taking away the sincerity and friendly atmosphere this art form offers your argueing over how to take a picture and wouldnt begin to know how to fill a frame

I bought a 40D 12 months ago. I must say that I would have bought the XTI if i'd just read up on them or seen a few of these vids but for me I was taken by the 30D I borrowed to try out first due to the ease and speed of setup for shots and scrolling through images etc. I'm glad I did as I do a bit of sports photography (bike racing) and when you need the speed it's great although I will say that a 450 or xti takes just as good a pic if setup right and if you can use the same lenses if upgrading
