hey gordon! i rly need your help .. i'm swaying to and fro between the canon eos 40d and 50d. the 50d only costs about 50? more than the 40d anymore so is that a GO for the 50d for sure? keep in mind that i'm also planning to buy lenses at the price of 300-400? by brands like sigma or tamron so is then the 40d the better choice because of the 14mp of the 50d and those lenses wouldn't be profitable at a 50d? i've already read your reviews but couldn't find help there.. thanks in advance

Luckily a swedish camera store Scandinavian Photo has come over a limited stock of 40d houses that they sell for 5995 swedish crona compared to Nikon d300 18495 swedish crona. I ordered one amidetly. I save a lot of money I am in heaven.

Why did I get a thumbs down? Hacked firmware updates do void canon warranties. Ya it is just a software replacement but that is the deal with most companies that manufacture something like this. Updating your camera with unofficial firmware does void the warranty. It doesn't hurt the camera at all but canon doesn't want to pay for it if it does.

why? It isnt a firmware replace, just a piece of code that runs from the CF. (and let the cam think that its new firmware). When the camera gives an error, you can remove the CF and the battery, after a while replace the CF and battery and there you go without any change!

The technique is identical for all of Canon's current DSLRs, incoluding the 50D. You can also use a film SLR, although obviously there won't be live view for focusing! You'll have to reply on the viewfinder alone.

@simargl don't be paranoid. the purpose of a camera is to take pictures, and also, most cameras don't fail exactly at 50,000 and they break before or after. my friend'snikon d300 has a dur. of 150,000 and has 200,000 (he does weddings)

I would recommend using the live view function while shooting landscapes or long exposures as there's not as much movment because the mirror is up already... just a thought

Loving all your comments on all these great cameras! I just bought the 40D with the 17-85 IS. Only a few left in shops here in Ireland. Only problem i had was the price...?999 was the cheapest here and £823 in England which works out more. D90 is again a great camera 50D also but if i had the money i would get the D300. For now my 40D is going to keep me very happy...its an awesome camera and would advise anyone to go out and snap up the few remaining 40D's that are left.

hey camera fans, im looking at 2 cameras, either the canon eos 40d or the nikon d90. my backgraound is as a skateboarding photographer (toungue in cheek but thats what im using it for) aswell as everyday travel photos as i go about my life lol im struggling to dcide between the additional megapixels and aperture capobilities (high speed shooting in low light conditions) of the d90 or the 6.5 frames a second of the canon. soz if i mad any idioty mistakes in this, but all helps good :)

You're welcome, although success is not guaranteed. If you've not used the card after the format, you should be able to get most, if not all, data back. If you've already shot some pictures with it, chances are that you've really wiped the original data. Fingers crossed. I like the freeware utility pc inspector to recover lost data, but others might do the job just as well.

i skate as well and i have taken skate photos for a while. my advice is to get a camera that is pretty rugged because you dont want to be worrying about breaking it since when you take photos you are very close to the floor. I am using a canon 300d at the moment and it works fine for me but the processing is to slow so my advice is to buy a camera with a very quick processor since when people are trying tricks its pretty rapid

I have the 40D for a few months now. I got it with the kit lens EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. This lens is a good "starter" lens but to really get the most out of the 10.1 MP CMOS Sensor get L lenses as soon as you can afford it. Canon L lenses are really fucking expensive... but worth every penny... the first image from L glass you take, you will immediately see a difference from the kit lens. Overall, I'm really happy with the 40D's performance.

Personally the only reason why I would opt for the 40D is only because it shoots faster and has a high flash sync speed compared to the 5D otherwise he would have been happier with the 5D, smoother images, slightly better dynamic range, faster focusing and full frame. 3:06 is the best shot of this collection, I'm still trying to figure out why he exposes the way he does. The hard light from the flash is blowing out the dress in many of the shots, there is no detail. The 1D mark III would be the optimal choice for a wedding, 10fps for quick capture, & and huge dynamic color range to help draw in the details. I noticed, all the shots with high apertures were slightly out of focus or washed out with flash, while the low apertures were more dynamic. Needs work.

Another nice video. I think you should have told even (especially) beginners at using manual mode that they cannot rely on the camera's exposure readings in different kinds of lighting situations. The camera is using reflective metering and assuming that the portion of the picture you're taking is about 18% gray. Good explanations and demonstrations.

to get your quick dial to work, you need to turn the on/off button to that slanted line above the "on" function. if you don't the quick dial will not work. it's in the manual. photography is a balance of shutter speed and aperture and what you want to acheive is to have the exposre reading right in the middle, most of the time if you're a beginner. So when you press the shutter half-way down look to see where the line is and move the speed or aperture up or down so the line is in the middle.

Hay dude grate camera isnt it? I got one in Jan (i got the 17-85IS lens kit but i tend to use my 17-40 lens on it and keep the 71-85 on the 400D for light work) To tell the truth i want to throw the thing out the window now. The wired shooting isn't working anymore and the camera wont connect to the computer at all so i kinda need to have faith in my card reader lol. Hope i can find a way to fix it but i don't hold out much hope as i've already taken it out and re-installed it twice to no avail.

Large prints of your works? I'm pretty curious to see what masterpiece needs so large prints where a 10MP print isn't enough. But dont worry, this year 60D will come up, and you will be able to stamp still mooore larger prints.

again you don't know what you are talking about, i sold the 30d to a struggling photographer friend as i need the extra mp from the 50d as i am now making large prints of my work. the 40d is now my backup camera. your opinion isn't worth anything if you don't have the facts and is uninformed. the real money is spent on glass and the bodies are cheap and replaceable, they are just tools

i'm not insulting anyone, i just said my opinion! A guy who replaced 30d for 40d, and now again raplaced for 50d its not a photographer for me, just a money waster who like to get the last model of camera, watch, phone, and car. that's all.

what the hell do you know about me to be saying that, I travel a lot and needed a second body, the 30 d became my second camera so i wasnt always changing the lenses, the dust shake reeduction on the 40d was more than worth the upgrade, don't you have anything better to do than insult people you know nothing about, grow up

With canon offering a $200 discount on this camera, it is such a great buy almost in the range of of an 450 Xsi, but with a much superior build and feel. I have used prosumer POS cameras before, but this camera is so easy to learn. The picture quality is great. I have researched a few sites such as DPReview, Camera Labs, and other reviews and this camera, at this point offers best value. If you get one, very likely that you will be happy. I am, only regret is that I did not get it sooner.

40D,I was having the same issue but 40D is cheaper and sometimes produces less noise on higher iso than the 50D. You're not going to need the extra 5MP unless your are going to be enlarging your image A LOT.
