my brother got this for me about the time that it was released in China and looking at it now, the price is cut in half... Brother got it for 10 000 (EEK) or more (EEK is the currency of Estonia)... it's a nice camera. The videos you can make look good and sound good. The built in mic worked better than i thought it would be :D Lot's of cameras and mp3 players have had the mic but alot of them haven't worked that well

i really enjoy this camera- have written a very long review on amazon for it. but in short it's fantastic for all kind of photography, and i've taken some nice night shots as well. these days i'm only making time lapse videos- posted on my profile :-). my suggestion would be to NOT buy the lense accessories. it only adds to the weight (makes it bigger than a basic dslr!) for wide shots you can use the Tv setting- allows for a wide shot! love this camera!

Hello Gordon, Very nice review, i just have a quick question for you if you can answer please. I been using this camera for over a year now, no major probs i love it. Apart from occasional broken images every 15 or so shots. So i was wondering if a firmware update might fix it, do you know if there is a updated firmware release from Canon for G9?

I think part of it depends on your printer. Will it print that large of paper? Software, such as that which came with the camera will also allow you to choose different sizes. If you are going to print a photo that large you probably will want to take photos that are higher in pixels, which means they will take up more memory. If you push the "func. Set" button on the camera it will allow you to choose "normal" "fine" or "superfine." You can at the same time choose "L" to get 12M 4000x3000.

Yeah, to me the manual is too large and unorganized. The video was shot on an older Nikon camera, however you are correct that the last bit of it was recorded using the G9.

Going to purchase myself a G9 tomorrow after much deliberation to use as something more compact than my D-SLR for every day carrying around. Really like the time lapse videos you have posted. Hi there! One of my other videos describes how to get to color accent. You can use color accent for video or still photos. For video you must make sure the larger dial on top of your camera is at the video camera icon, and then just turn the round dial on the back of the camera until it says color accent on the screen. This is true for still photos as well, except the large dial on top of the camera is at SCN. Have fun playing with the colors!

How about using a little logic dude? Ever stop to think that between shots, while zooming, that a car might have driven behind the bird? So tell me how I was able to get a close up shot of the condos 20 stories up... I would have had to get a helicopter to get that close. Your comment tells me you know little about photography. Before speaking about something do a little research. Check out the specs on the camera... go try one out.

The G9 is probably he best digital camera I've ever used. The video at 2400 is beats any video camera I've used. I even pick single images from the video to use as single photos. I also played around with the time lapse to see a rose bloom..it was astonding!

I just bought the G9 on friday and I think I have made a good choice. ok the g10 has 2 more mega pixels but in photo shop under sharpen you can almost gain that anyway. the g10 has all the dials mounted on top of each other and is a bit ugly. to be honest i can not see many advantages except the g10 gives you more angle with its lens. I work in photography for a living and have a 5d, 50d, g9. 24-110, 28-300 and a sony hvr-z1e. the g9 in my tests is a powerfull pocket unit.

I own two Canon cameras, The Rebel XT and the Powershot G9 I dont think neither one is EXCELENT, but they complement each other, at least for my use The problem with DSLR cameras is the money. If you buy a DSLR you must spend on good lenses for it, and of course you will get fantastic results But Compact cameras like the G9 are much more versatile for their price, and they come with a lot of similar functions to a DSLR. How ever, this camera can show a lot of noise and its also very expensive

I'm sure the G9 is a great camera. When I say it's not camparable to an SLR camera, I'm not putting down the G9. I'm merely stating that any newer model SLR will take better quality pics than a digital point and shoot. For every person who has given me a thumbs down, Those are the people who know nothing of photography. And as for the telephoto lens that you can buy for these, I have not seen one worth it's price. I haven't tried the canon telephoto lens, but every other isn't worth 10 bucks.

yea for Nikateer I agree with the other person. I own a cannon G9 and its FARRR from a point and shoot cam. At a price of $499 retail it has all the features of most cameras costing 2x's as much including 12.1 MP and color swap. I suggest (Nikateer) you google reviews of the cannon G9 before you classify it as a point and shoot.

Please watch the video and tell me if I'm doing something wrong. Canon g9 works fine. When I install a Fotodiox wide Angle Lens, a black circle appears. Same with the Telephoto lens, but worse. The tube convertor is compatible with Canon G9. I select wide and telephoto from the menu, but nothing changes.

@beatsiz noob dont talk before understanding what is going on! both lenses are 0.5x but Fotodiox is 10 times cheaper than raynox, so I decided to give it a try. Even they said fotodiox was compatible with Canon G9 (and noone warned about vignetting issues) if ur not blind you can see the result above. After vignetting issues I returned back fotodiox and got the Raynox which gave perfect results for me. That's it, case closed. Don't act like genius.

You idiot. It completely depends on the adapter you use, the angle it captures and the focal length. So having a 0.25X vs a 0.5X is going to make a HUGE difference. Add a long adapter to either one and you get even more vignette. This is not the brands fault, it's your lack of knowledge on the subject.

You have to move the zoom to the line which is 3/4 along your zoom indicator at the top of your screen, its the same for both lenses, dont go too far or you will have to reboot your camera. Ive posted a video response but it doesnt seem to have happened yet, good luck

hi Beltatex, I'm not sure if you have found the answer to this problem. i have the G9 & just bought the Canon conversion lens adapter: LA-DC58H and the Canon Wide Converter (the wide angle lens) :WC-DC58B. I am not having the problem you are experiencing. I did not have to change any of the settings to get the lens to work. I simply put on the conversion lens adapter as you did and then added the wide angle lens and had no problems.

After troubling with Fotodiox accesories, I decided to spend money and purchased an original Canon Tube Adapter, Raynox HD7000 Pro Wide Angle and Sunpak Powerzoom 4000 AF. With photodiox lenses and adapter you will deal with vignetting issues. I highly recommend my combination for the ones who wants to take pictures at indoor places.

I would have to agree about the DSLR. In terms or price and size. You can get a compact DSLR like the Canon XT new for about $380, much less than the G9 costs new. And the XTI's keep dropping in price. Add an 18-55 IS for under $200 and your good to go. And since you like wide angle, those new Tokina 11-16's are awesome! And cheap for such a quality lens.

We just added the Canon Powershot G9 camera to our inventory and we have been rather impressed. It is not going to be the new workhorse but it will definitely get it used on regular basis. and btw, i had bought lense adapter, telephoto & wide angle lenses with it. but returned them after a week. it was pointless as it adds bulk to the camera (makes it larger than even small consumer DSLRs!) i dont plan to use G9 for wildlife/nature photography- for that i'll say buy a prosumer DSLR. i think buying adapter and other lenses for it gives a false impression that now we have a prosumer DSLR :-) For me, this is a small travel camera, and it does well on that front!

yes, canon G9 shoots videos in 1024x768. i just returned from spain tour-it was the trial tour for G9- and though im not big of videography, i took some videos of the dancing fountains in barcelona and they are all in 1024x768 format; and fantastic. btw, the still photography that i did was in 12MP- 3000x4000 and i set quality to "fine" mode instead of "super fine" and it was still amazing. what surprised me was how much i can learn about photography on this camera!

it took me about two months to decide between Canon G9 and Panasonic Lumxi TZ5. I went with Canon G9 and i tell you, it is fantastic. it has all the ease of any point and shoot cam PLUS, if you really want to learn about photography, it has all the funactionality of a manual camera. Thats what sealed the deal for me. right now have a basic time lapse clip on my page, will soon post soem pix.

So if it takes a frame every second thats 60 frames per minute which is 60x60=3600 frames per hour so an hour will be like 3600 divided by say 30 (fps video play back)which is 120 secs which is 2 minutes?

DSLRs are really a great step up. My biggest complaint is size. I'm gonna look at the new Olympus Pen series..near DSLR quality, interchangeable lenses, about the size of my G9... once it matures and they get another model or two out.

Thanks for the post. I live in the Caribbean and have only been diving a couple times since quitting my dive instructor / boat captain gig since I've already done at least a thousand dives where I live. I got the camera and housing as a way to get interested in getting back in the water. And yes, you're right: The camera does great high-res video. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow. I have a ton of small silica packs that come in Cisco AP mounting kits. They're perfect!

I removed one comment from today... foul language... apparently complaining about the tint of the video. This was simply an example video, it's not an attempt at a good video... it was the first time I had the camera underwater... just point and shot. On resolution. I think it was at low resolution, then to movie maker and reduced further, then to Youtube which made it look worse... the camera shoots much better video. My low res stuff on my blog looks better.... google 'kona dive blog'.

Just as the number of camera owners is going up, the number of photography experts is going down. I see so many people using 1000$ DSLR's and clicking away on AUTO mode. Its so pathetic. Cameras are becoming perfect and photography is becoming extinct. Isn't that funny?

Man, I got that camera last year before going to Egypt. I do not have a clue about photography and keep it on auto all the time. It works good but my night shots suck ass. I'm sure there is a setting in there somewhere for this.

This is the first video of yours that i've seen and with this video i am convinced that you have some good knowledge about the principles of Photography.. I would guess that you have used a film SLR camera from you Shutter priority explanation, ISO and your likeness towards the view finder.. Great review indeed!!!!
