I used a Fuji bridge for years and found the EOS 500D a step back in many ways. I spent £700+ on a decent kit only to have less zoom, more focusing noise, a range of completely useless lenses like the ones reviewed above and confusion over the utterly pointless EF-S standard. The Canon Digital Photo Professional software is the worst I've ever used... oh, and I gotta pay £20 extra for a tulip hood. Canon must be raking it in.

I'm planning to get the sigma 17-70mm to replace my kit lens It is cheap(just £300), has optical stabilistation and macro, and, from what I have heard is great. I tried it on my friends 7d and it was quick and sharp. Its seems like a no-brainer at that price

Thanks for the comparison, im looking for some advice, im seeking to buy a Canon 550D for both Photography and Film purposes and im becoming more convinced that i should buy a upgrade lens instead of buying the average kit lens 18-55 it comes with. Im seeking for a smooth zoom and focus range which is both versatile in terms of zoom and wide angle cause i base my work around both portraiture and documentary photography. i need somethign which is good in low light and good with film too, thanks

Hi Gordon, I own the 18-55 kit lens and having error 99, so I am thinking to get a new lens and your video helps a lot in giving me ideas which 1 to buy. I did some research about putting EF and L lenses on crop sensor camera. For canon its 1.6X so I am wondering if let say i purchase a EF lens or a L lens do we divide the focal length by 1.6 as well? And today kit lens already have IS built in and I find it hard to find suitable replacement. Im also get addicted with the IS and I think I have to find lens with stabilization built in. @823kaji well for zoom u'll need a bigger range of focal length, 200 mm or 300 mm will be great, but as u stated ur a beginner i'd reccomend starting with the 18-55 and upgrade when u know ur way around the camera. my 2 cents

buying a video camera with equivalent image quality would be: HVX + 35mm adapter = $4000 + $2000 > so you're looking around $6000 minimum. VS 5D MKII with a prime lens ~$3000 Other advantages = small size. You'll need 10 mins to set up a HD cam with adapter, MKII you just click and shoot even in small space In the right hands you can get videos that would come close to image quality of Red One video camera (which is 7 times more expensive, and no I didnt same SAME quality as Red but CLOSE :)

The 5D Mark II is NOT a "video camera". It's a stills camera that 'can' shoot (seemingly really good quality) video. I don't get why everyone's so hyped over its video capabilities. If what you want is a high-quality video camera, then buy just that.

@sharpanator The Zeiss 35mm is a great lens, but the Canon 35mm f/1.2L is a different animal. Think of the Zeiss 35mm as a more exotic and higher quality version of the non-L EF 35mm f/2. The manual focusing ring is also a joy to use, buttery smooth with the perfect amount of resistance. -Mike Z

I love these lenses. It is fantastic to have the aperture ring on the lens. I am said that practically all manufacturers abonded this design. I also love the lens made of metal, and the beautifully smooth focus ring. The only manual lens made of metal and with aperture ring that I have is Olympus OM 300mm f/4.5. I mean, this lens old, but it's such fun to use. Why did the manufacturers abandond the aparture ring design? It's beyond me... Kudos to Zeiss for the fine prime lenses!

Your right. it does not matter what card you use. The 6.3 fps will be the same. Only the number of shots at one burst is affected very slightly. It will hardly be noticeable and who is going to be shooting forever and that top speed anyway. Not me.

Well the D90 has been fout or about a year now and also its video is just 720p. The D300S is worth a look, the D300 doesnt have video. The D300 is superior to the D90 and also has HD video at 720p. I'd still go for the 7D, which is right up to date and has 50% more mp if thats your thing..

Thats easy :) 7D. You have to look past the obvious feature too, like the megapixels and video. Pretty much the whole camera is uprated and many consider it a professional camera with a "subframe" (1.6x crop) sensor. Also bear in mind the D90 is aging now...

If you had the ability to receive a camera for free with no charges which one would it be? Canon 50D, Canon 7D, or Nikon D90? Because money isnt a big deal for me. So if you got anyone of those cameras listed before which one would it be?

I suspect the 50D and the 7D share many controls. If cost isnt an issue and you want a Canon mid range camera then the 7D should be your choice because many of its features have been upgraded over the 50D. If you arent dead set on Canon then its worth looking at Nikon too... D90 is good, D300 is good too..

I had a 40D before the 50D so I got used to the controls. As far as I am concerned the menu system is pretty simple, and colour coded as are all Canon menus. button position/functions are easy to remember. There may be better newer mid range DSLRs out there now, so it might be worth having a look, especially if you'd like video... The 7D is a 1/3rd more expensive, but hugely spec'd..

Generally speaking, you should concentrate more on your lenses than on your camera. The type of lenses you choose / can afford to use, also dictate a lot of the type of photos you will be able to get. That said, pretty much any of the current Canon DSRL-bodies will give you fantastic results if you use it with a decent piece of glass. And, most importantly, you need to know HOW to take photographs in the first place :)

Is it best to just buy the body of the camera and buy a better lens later?... are kit lenses just to get you started? Meaning...to get the best result out of your canon 40D or 50D you will upgrade to a better lens quickly, leaving your kit lens redundant? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Depends on what your doing. As in if its for a hobby or if, say, your a pro wedding photographer. But the 50d is a great camera and the lens is good too. Read up on it, you'll find good reviews on both of them.

Thanks for the reply. In some of my first reviews, I found that scripting took too much time rehearsing the lines and extra takes to get it right. Using an auto cue to the side just looked like I wasn't looking at the camera and an autocue machine costs about two grand. Everything is off my head with some minor pointers of what I want to mention before I start.

Buy it (unless you already have!). I have had a 350D, 40D and a now have a 50D. its brilliant. Dont listen to anyone whining about sensor noise. All sensor will produce significant noise at ISO 3200 and above. Up to ISO 1600 noise control is more than adequate.

if you're familiar with the SLR functions you wont have a hard time with higher models... its all a matter of getting use to the camera.. i went from a film SLR straight to a 50D and it was easy.. no trouble at all
