Every time I watch this amazing movie I can't stop crying! The tears? just roll down my cheek with no control. I wonder what is it in this film that triggers this response in me. Is it the nostalgia for my long lost childhood and adolescent years? Is it the things I wanted but wasn't able to do in those magical 1950s and 1960s? Is it the brilliant music of Ennio Morricone? Is it a combination of these factors? Who knows! A real masterpiece in every respect!

I liked this movie, but I'll be the first to admit my...thing...for musicals, especially those with scantly clad women singing...and suggestively dancing. I'd have to see it again to figure out whats "wrong" with it. The original tends to be the best, and this is an adaptation of an adaptation. The music was good, if nothing else, and I'd love to see this onstage. Look up some of the OBC clips on here. Different feel but great in it's own way.

Both songs, "Be Italian" as well as "Guarda la Luna" explain the experiences of Guido's childhood which are crucial to understand his current condition. That's what the whole movie is about. Yes "dear sir", I know it is from the original stage musical, in the film, however, it felt utterly pointless. Those three numbers and even "Folies Bergeres" could've been removed, Judi Dench was a bore, along with Loren, my least two favorite of the cast, but hey, at least Dench is relevant to the story, unlike Loren (just a hallucination), Kate Hudson (slut reporter made specially for the film) and Fergie (insignificant hooker).

"Be Italian" is from the origional musical, dear sir. The other two songs are new, and yes, "Cinema Italiano," was written purely for Hudson. Sophia Loren's song was changed from the far slower and more operatic number "Nine" (No pun intended. Well, Maybe just a little one...) mainly to suit her less-than-broadway-caliber voice. I personally loved the power in "Be Italian," but I agree with you on "Italiano."

This was not the intended ending to this movie. Tornatore was told that he had to shorten the movie because it was too long. I have seen the director's cut full version and in my humble opinion the original ending, the one in this video is far better. This version represents the movie that won the Academy Award for best foreign movie. I doubt that the original, longer version would have won. This is probably the best and most famous "forced" shortening of a movie in cinematic history. GLORIOUS !

Every time I watch this amazing movie I can't stop crying! The tears? just roll down my cheek with no control. I wonder what is it in this film that triggers this response in me. Is it the nostalgia for my long lost childhood and adolescent years? Is it the things I wanted but wasn't able to do in those magical 1950s and 1960s? Is it the brilliant music of Ennio Morricone? I think the whole thing is a myth...it's just one of those well loved medieval age story that we all love to hear from time to time. The actual actors, Colin and Bradley (playing Merlin and Arthur respectively) actually made a documentary (also shown on BBC) and toured around places where they think has a strong connection to the Arhturian legend. As for the real Merlin...I think that will be more elusive to find than the real Arthur. :-)

Okay then. I'll take your word for it. Hope it's worth it as I rather do like the whole Merlin/King Arthur legend. It's quite intriguing to be sure. I wonder if Merlin was a real person or not. What do you think? Could he have existed? He was probably just a healer or seer who gained a big-time reputation, I think. Maybe he was a prophet. Who knows.

Yes give it a try. It's only 13 episodes per season. The show starts, I would say a bit slow as it tries to build up characters--precisely because it differs from the actual legend--but once that's established...it's actually fun! ;-) Keep the magic secret! ;-)

Don't be sad!! Actually, all 5 of them (Strify,Yu,Shin,Kiro,Romeo) are living together now. Romeo said they're getting the band back up and running again soon. I can't wait!! For me this couldn't be easier to understand(not a jibe, the simplest approach is the best-its easiest to understand it as having no meaning, and it doesn't ). Its surrealist and anti narrative. The words don't make any sense.. The swirling draws you in to try derive some meaning from it but then takes it away by presenting you with gibberish. Its trying to take us away from the limits of narrative a present us with something boundless and limitless..so its meaning is its lack of meaning!

Funny you should mention Lang (whom I love, and perhaps appreciate more than I do Duchamp, though I don't think the two bear comparison). The wheel aesthetic actually reminds me very much of Lang. I guess it's not necessary to "understand" a work of art; at least, not in the domestic way you "understand" other things... Visual arts, especially since the artist you call "the guy" showed up in 1914, demands from you as a viewer something more than just opening your eyes. If you are interested in the origins of contemporary art, you may want to study in depth the work of Marcel Duchamp. Two books I suggest: the Complete Works (by A. Schwartz) and his biography by Calvin Tomkins.
