Where is the very first part of the Cadencea? I like the freshness of Ove's playing. He plays it in quite a theatrical way,but it kind of fits. However, he does make some mistakes (not in the cadenza, but in the part before, in the other video 3:50) and pushs the tempo (for example when there is a stretto) to the very limit!

Leif Ove Andsnes is a great pianist no doubt. I have followed the entire concerto with the music sheet in my hands and could not find any technical or musical shortcoming. I completely agree with daywithering, Andsnes is an outstanding artist of the piano

He is most definitely not lip synching! I haven't put anything over the live video either. The quality of the video isn't great though, maybe that's what's making the image and sound slightly out of sync.

I can't believe the crowd applauded!! That only shows they are not acquainted with this piece of music. And as much as musicians need approval, that was certainly not a right timing. In every audience there are people who can hardly wait for musicians to stop playing so they can applaud. The rule is: if you don't know when to applaud, don't move the muscle till somebody wiser starts clapping.

@zetangie because it's the proms... less formal, it's for everyone to come and listen... so you have a more instantanious reaction to things then the more formal (and of course people who are used to it and now the formalities) settings... still a nice gesture though. comes from raw emotions!

@leitandi He plays it formidably, and I have no doubt his ethnic musical understanding plays a large part. One could never take that away from him, nor would one want to. But I am old enough to remember, for just one example, when a Texan kid in his 20s took the Tchaikovsky competition away from every pianist in Moscow, and Kruschev told the terrified Russian judges: "If he played the best, give him the prize." Andsnes himself is more cooperative musically than competitive anyway, bless him.

The best recording: LOA with Bergen filharmoniske orkester. Y? Norwegians knows how to play norwegian music. The same with Tchaikovsky, russians plays Tchaikovsky best!!!

There is a "recording" of some of this made by Grieg himself and I think Andsnes is closer to that feeling than anyone else. Grieg usually played fast and with a bit more staccato than most players do today.
