halogen-quartz bulbs ARE incandescent bulbs, incandescent just means that it's a filament structure (a thin filament of metal encased in an inert gas so that it won't ignite when heated enough that it incandesces). The only thing that makes Halogen bulbs so different is the materials used; tungsten filament, halogen gas, and a quartz-glass bulb, which means it can go MUCH hotter (thus brighter, thus prettier) than conventional incandescent bulbs.

Hey just watched a video prophotolife, and i am a true beginner. He used a soft box that used a replaceable front diffuser I guess they yellow over time it also had an inner removable diffuser to further soften light. What I really liked was a white inner surface that could be removed to expose a silver that can be flipped over to gold to warm an image now if i could just find one. Cheers m8

Because you cannot. Most lenses have a limited minimum working distance, for example, it is limited at 4 feet, you can not get any closer because 4 feet is the closest it could focus. Any Micro?Nikkors are designed for close?ups because of its short minimum focus distance.

Well, if you are rather interested in doing bug portraits, the 60mm ?/2.8's have too small working distance between the front lens and the subject (see how close the motorcycle is in this video; that is at 1:1X magnification). Also, the light from the SB-600 will be blocked because the lens is in the way. Look at longer lenses such as 105mm ?/2.8's / 200mm ?/4.0's and also R1C1 Close-Up Speedlight System. The SB-600 won't work well for close-ups because the lens will be blocking the light.

Hi, thanks for this and all your videos, I'm a huge fan of you. I have a D90 (DX) and thinking of buying a Micro-Nikkor. I'm thinking of the 60mm NanoCrystal. That does 90mm on my camera... What do you think? Can I portrait bugs (like ants) with that one? I don't want to like see the eyes of flies and that, but just capture the small things... And what about lightening, is a SB600+micro softbox ok for amateur daylight portaiting?

It's all the same. Do not get depth of field and bokeh mixed up; depth of field is the "sharp" zone, which is the same for all focal lengths at 1:1X magnification at the same aperture. Bokeh is the out of focus rendition; it is all different depending on aperture you are using, number of aperture blades, curved or straight blades, etc..

Covering viewfinder helps camera to calculate shutter speed correctly in Av mode (set F if in Tv mode). You may try to check it at home. Just turn on your camera w/o taking off the lens cap. We are afraid not, no. 1:1 is the magnification ratio, it tells you how big the subject will appear on the sensor / film. At 1:1, the size of the subject will appear the same on the sensor / film. There are five Micro-Nikkor lenses in today's line-up, however, they all vary in minimum focus distance. The 60mm is very close while the 105mm gives more space, again, while the 200mm gives much more space without scaring the bugs away. All lenses have minimum focus distance limit, sorry.

currently I have a non DSLR camera with a +7 close up filter on it. I can get a pretty darn close image but I have to be almost exactly the right distance (about 20cm) . I'm looking to get a DSLR and a macro lens, but I want to make sure it is a powerful lens. How can I tell? Would I be able to get a macro lens for under $300 that would have 1:1 magnification? The principle is exactely the same however the build in flash does not always perform optiamlly and throws around extra or too low light! So if you want to stay in control you wil have to work with your flash exposure compensation (that is the intensity if the flash control) in sync with the shutter!

If he'd continued to decrease the speed, the model would indeed become overexposed. To go beyond that balanced point, the flash-lit model would have to be placed in a shadow, as to not recieve so much of the ambient light. That would make the background lighter than a "correct" exposure, but sill result in a correct one for the model.

I was using a Nikon SB-900 Speedlight shooting through a Lastolite 15x15 EZBox literally inches from their face, 45 degrees to the side of the camera. No, I did not meter the light either. @o0ILeGeNdI0o exactly. I know I have looked really bad too, but I decided to wear only eye make-up now (great decision^^). Because I had some really bad acne (it's a lot better now) I always wanted to cover it with foundation, you know those drugstore products.. awful but I was like I don't want to look ugly too, but I know better now.. even when that means that a lot of boys don't see you or just only find you kind. Not that's a problem, the 16 year old boys in my class are really childish.^^

@CCtjehh Now that you mention it no i have never seen her without make-up but its true you dont have to put make-up on to be pretty and what i hate is that some girls put on like a TON of make-up because they think its gonna make them look pretty or because the "popular" girls do it and they end up looking bad but they still do it because other people do it and they wanna be like them... its pretty sad when you think about it... who would want to look like a whore? or act like one... :(

I mean when someone wears a jeans a day longer as she/he is supposed to wear it, people are already telling gossips.. I see girls (without make-up) who I think look fine, who are getting bullied by some girls who look better because they do wear make-up. but for example did you ever see tyra banks without make-up? I know a lot of girls who look a way better without make-up..

This is a fabulous lesson. I really enjoyed the way you presented the information. I kind-of understood how the 3 different lighting styles worked before but now I really get it and I can't wait to get home and play! Great job also going over the pros & cons between studio strobes and speedlights. Speed lights are better for me as a beginner with no set studio. Thanks again!

there is no flash, whats attached to the camera is the wireless commander. it basically activates the strobelights on click. the flash you see are the strobelights initiated. setups are on reflects. most occasion, on 200 ISO, we use 1/200, f./6.3, and a prime lens is preferable (35mm). play with the aperture till satisfied.

That depends on your needs. If you want to take ten pictures to get one really nice picture then the DSLR should be your choice. If your are looking for the very best quality for large prints and you are experienced to the point where you take perfect pictures in every situation then the SLR should be your choice. If price is no problem, I would choose a very high resolution DLSR because the quality of these cameras is to the point where the picture quality is even better then film cameras.

you can do DOF on a point and shoot, its just harder. Although on my LX3 its quite easy because of the focal length of the lens, and the sensor is larger than most P&S cams. even a cheapie can do it, but dont expect great blur or anything

They're not big because of their ideas, They're big because of their market strategies since they were the first ones to sell Software separated from hardwares so people are able to build their own computers, its very cheap that way and MS Dos/Windows became famous. Now about Linux its something like: If people are able to build their own PCs why not a Software Open Source that anyone can modify and transform etc. In other words: Linux is perfect for developpers.
